Like Roy, I am a great fan of Renaissance wax polish.
( With metal sword scabbards I squirt a fair amount of WD 40 into them and then let the excess drain out to ensure that any rust or moisture does not affect the blade ) P.B.

Thanks Peter, will definitely look into that today. I use gun oil on my swords which seems to do the trick. Have used WD40 previously but it does need doing more often I found. But none of them have scabbards so that's never been an issue.
Reminds me I saw a lovely old court sword yesterday, was heavily rusted but was very nice. If I'd been carrying more money on me I'd have grabbed that as well. |

Is Vaseline suitable for use on blades?

Hi Jack I have done in the past on modern repro swords, but tend to use gun oil now purely as I find it easier to apply and I think leaves a cleaner finish, but I'm sure Roy can give you a better answer as to whether you should or not.

Now then, what on earth is a girl like you, going to do with a thing like that?

You don't approve Frank?
I have broad taste in militaria, not just badges. I do happen to like weapons, the more beautiful the better. It's had a bit of a clean up since those photo's it really is very nice. |

I certainly did not say that I don't approve, I'm just rather surprised that was all, the crowned VR is always a nice thing to see and at Dundee, in the Colony of Natal, on the 20th of October 1899, the enemy had absolutely no answer whatsoever after being confronted by a small body of 1st KRRC upon the summit of that wretched hill, after taking a very brief glance at the "cold" steel, they were compelled to turn and run like frightened rabbits down the hill.

I was just enquiring whether you did approve or not, just out of interest. A lot of people aren't keen on that sort of thing. Although overall I think guns tend to be more divisive.
It's fascinating, I can imagine it would be a terrifying sight. |

Sometimes, it all came down to what you stuck on the end of a gun, certainly the case in South Africa all those years ago, they just kept on advancing, climbing over any dead or wounded, but, I was surprised by your purchase, never mind, it's a very "green" hobby and things like this really were beautifully manufactured.

Exactly, it is beautiful. Addictive though, if I could find a few more at that price I'd be very happy.
Beautiful piece of history. |
