Default Soviet medals WW2

I have finally got round to putting my small collection of Soviet medals and orders in a display case. There are some hard won campaign medals amongst them including Kiev, Leningrad and Stalingrad.

Very nice. Can you recommend any book in English which discusses the reproductions?

I'm always worried about the medal having the wrong ring type or having a brass instead of steel backing plate etc. It seems like a nightmare knowing what is good.

Sorry, I cannot recommend any books as I am unaware of any in English. I bought all these in Sevastopol about 10 years ago. Most of them have aluminium backing plates. The three orders are high quality and have individual numbers etched on to the backs. Uncle Joe came from an antique shop and cost $10

Soviet Orders & Medals by Paul McDaniel is the essential reference; however, I don't recall if it covers any of the fakes.

Your best bet is to join one of the many fora that concern such, as there are a lot of "type" and "variation" classifications concerning individual medals alone; plus, period replacement ribbons/back plates, modifications, related manufacture timeframes, etc, just to confuse things further!

Good luck and it's a rewarding venture.

Best,

Marcus

This example likely dates in bestowal from around 1956-1957 and within the allotted Long Service numbers. There are notional lists on the net, but it is sometimes possible to get them researched at cost too.

Best,

Marcus

An excellent collection HW and nicely displayed too. Congrats.
I believe Werlich's book also deals with Soviet awards, but again no guides to recognise fakes.

Thank you. I am missing a few so do not have the full Great Patriotic War set. These were very cheap a few years ago when the Soviet regime collapsed. Some are quite expensive now and there are plenty of fakes around.
