Default The Formation Sign - 100 Years of the RAF

Received my copy of issue 270 this morning. "Per Adua Ad Astra - Celebrating 100 years of Royal Air Force Uniforms and Insignia".

48 pages of detailed information beautifully illustrated throughout with colour images and black and white photos.

While I am not an RAF collector this is a "must have" for all with an interest in military history.

Congratulations to the editor and other Forum members for their contributions.

Tim

Default The Formation Sign - 100 Years of the RAF

I have just opened my copy, a wonderful effort by all concerned and I hope they have printed a few overs to sell, a must for badge collectors.

Agreed - Absolutely. Is the RAF Museum aware of its existence? Mike

Thanks Tim for starting this thread - quite right too, a great tribute to RFC, RNAS, RAF, and its many branches.

Never mind 'where can I get a copy' ... why not join? The Military Heraldry Society would welcome more recruits whose collective knowledge can only add benefit to all.

The expertise encapsulated in the journal 'The Formation Sign' is already incredible and covers a huge range of military and home front interests. The more members that join, the better. We have a great committee, but particular credit to our Editor, Jon Mills ('postwarden' on the forum here).

I was disappointed to miss the unique opportunity yesterday - granted to Members of the Military Heraldry Society, and advertised in our journal - to visit RAF Scampton as private guests (I wish I could clone myself to be in more than one place at a time ... but already have a twin). What a great way to celebrate 100 years of the RAF ... looking forward to reports of the visit.

Mike

On my return home from RAF SCAMPTON on Sat 21/07 my copy was waiting for me. It was a good day at Scampton, when I eventually got there (drat damm sat nav) meeting old friends and new. I came away with 19 examples of the Southern Command formation patch (thanks Malcolm).

Many thanks to Jon & wife for making the arrangement.

Sorry to have missed the meeting, the latest Formation Sign is a much better reference work for RAF badges than the hardback book I have on the subject.

If time and inclination permit, I should love to see the 19 examples of the Southern Command sign. Occasional rather desirable manufacturers' errors crop up from time to time. This is an RA variation. Mike

Just seen on a news app that the MOD confirm that they are selling off RAF Scampton.

A few more bob towards the Brexit divorce bill
