Hi All

This thread is a continuation of another...... see "The LDY" in the "General Topics" section.

There are two "genuine" Adonised Aluminium badges for the LDYPAO. From 1957 to 1963 the Other ranks wore the brass & white metal badge that then became issue to Officers only on the introduction of the AA badge in 1963.

1957 O/R BR Pattern Number : 17372 (Gilt Metal & White Metal)

Below is a comaprison to show the differences in the detail of each badge. The Post 1970 Pattern is known as "The Dazzler" by the LDYPAO personel, the reason for this is evident as the gold is so bright on the main body of the badge that it makes it hard to actually see any detail in bright light.

1963 O/R AA Pattern Number : 18437 (Slider is stamped J.R.GAUNT LONDON for an early issue badge or J.R.GAUNT B'HAM for a later issue badge)
1970 O/R AA Pattern Number : N/A (Actual manufacture date is not known at the moment and is to be confirmed, slider is stamped J.R.GAUNT B'HAM only)

1. The Rose Petals and Crown are combined in the post 1970.
2. The St Edwards Crown is wider and appears to have no orb on the post 1970.
3. "Bert's Crest" is thinner, in lower relief, and of a poor quality on the post 1970.
4. The ribbon ends are more extended on the post 1970.
5. The shank is longer (not sure if this is relevant) on the post 1970.

"The Dazzler" would have been worn only as a last resort by soldiers of LDYPAO post 1970 (if we couldnt purchase a 1963 pattern), otherwise it was painted dark brown (then wiped) and used for the field in our Berets.

NB:- There is a third AA badge that has a completley flat "Bert's Crest", with little or no detail. Its not known if this is a legitamate badge at this point, but it is based on the 1963 pattern. It was not worn in the Regiment/Squadron of the LDYPAO.

In 1992 we were also issued with a "Patch" badge to wear on the Tank Park or in the Field (we could wear AA Badge or patch). The patch became popular as it didnt snag in vehicle Cam' Nets when tactical on Excercise.

An LDYPAO Officers Service Dress Cap Badge 1957-2006, the lugs are 14mm in length and the badge is die stamped in the way that the O/R 1957-63 is; but then back filled with brass..... I assume to keep the lugs rigid. There is no makers mark on this badge so I am assuming that its Gaunts.

Hello Griff,
Having re-read this thread it brought to mind an illustration of an officers forage cap in 'Military Collectables' (not the greatest of references)
I note you have posted an officers silver and gilt lugged badge,what are your thoughts on this illustration and text seems wrong to me i.e being staybrite.
There is also illustrated a forage cap c/w bullion badge.

Thanks for the pics and info....... the scarlet side cap with "silver" edges, and 2 plain brass 1/2 ball buttons (in deference to the DY), was worn by both Officer and O/R. The Only difference would be the Bullion badge or the O/R Brass 1957-63 or A/A Badge.

Here are some of the O/Rs wearing the side cap in LDYPAO (Recce) Squadron the 7th (v) Royal Anglian c1971-75. This was normally worn in "walking out dress" blues in the LDYPAO Regiment by all ranks also, as well as a Duty cap. Note the LY "Hussar" pattern scarlet No.1 Cap also.

THE "FLAT" BADGE

The above badge is known as the "Flat" badge, the LY crest is almost flat compared to the J R Gaunt versions. The production date of this badge is not currently known, but its assumed to be post 1970.

Makers: H W. TIMINGS LTD B'HAM

** This badge looks very much like the post 1970 J R Gaunts badge, there is a slight difference in the Crown "bridges" being bigger. This badge "might" have been worn c1970-75, but shunned by the LDYPAO Squadron of the Royal Yeomanry (1992-today).... due to its poor quality (specifically because the LY Crest is almost flat and not pronounced).

So in summary.... there appears to be 6 different varients of the LDYPAO cap badge, x2 Brass/White Metal & x4 A/A.

No Idea, I saw it on eBay a few months ago and saw it sell for some rediculous price!? The colour is wrong for a start ...... and that slider is just enormous..... it is quite obviously a fake.

My only other thought on it is a possible "sampler"...... but I dont believe that a reputable badge maker would produce something like that to show a Regiment's representative?

Just had a look at the badge in my khaki cap Griff and it is a 'flat' one JR Gaunt London. I bought it at a militaria fair as I couldn't get an issue officers S/G as my timings and location didn't fit well with the PRI at Tigers Rd. I'll get a photo at some point.

It will be the post 1970 Gaunt B'Ham in your cap if its "Flat'ish".... its a common badge.
