Hampshire Shoulder Titles
I am attaching (At least wull try to), a picture of three Hampshire shoulder titles. The top one I am quite happy about as being pre 1946, the second one I reckon is a copy, and it is the third one I would appreciate help over.
The white on blue 'Royal Hampshire'. I am guessing it was worn from 1946 onwards, but do not know. Nor do I know how long it was worn for before being replaced with a white on red 'Royal Hampshire' Many thanks, JohnG

The middle title looks like the Pakistan-made ones appearing all over the net. Does the back look like an explosion in a telephone exchange or a plate of unruly spaghetti?
The bottom one, actually yellow on dark blue, is the post-1946 version of the title and looks fine from here. I think it survived to the end of the battledress era. |

Hi Staffs,
You are absolutely right of course, it IS yellow on blue. To my tired old eyes it looked like a dirty white. I hang my head in shame. Many thanks for confirming it came into use when the regiment became 'Royal Hampshire' in 1946. As it remained in use to the end of the battle dress era does that mean the white on red s/titles for the regiment I have seen are fakes as well as the middle one in my picture, which I suspected was made in a pondokkie along the Khyber Pass. I am attaching a photo of 'Spaghetti Junction' I am getting a few badges and other bits and pieces together in readiness for a talk on 'Minden Day' next Monday. Regards, John

Hello again. One final one. Please can you help with some info about the brass 'R.HAMPSHIRE' as per photo attached. I assume it came in post 1946 for use on No. 1 dress, but there again I am guessing.
Many thanks, JohnG

Hello John,
The S/T that you show is indeed that used post 1946. The Original post 1946Title was "ROYAL HAMPSHIRE" but this according to Westlake was soon withdrawn. The "R HAMPSHIRE" comes in two versions, Other ranks (Westlake 1100) and Officers (Westlake 1101). As to what order of dress it was worn on I cannot say I'm afraid. I am still hoping to make it along to you next Monday and will of course be happy to bring my Hampshire badges for display. There are still gaps in my collection of course but between us we should be able to provide something worth viewing. Best Regards. Ry |

Ry, that would be absolutely fantastic if you can make it on Monday. That would really be the icing on the top of what is looking good for that day's talk.
I have updated the history blog this morning, so that will put you in the picture as to what we are doing. Phil; Many thanks for the offer of use of 'ESSEX', and I wish I could use them, but we are a load of 'Hampshire Hogs', and I cannot fit them into this particular presentation, but will remember them, so be warned mate. Best wishes, johnG

Phil, I find I have a single ESSEX s/title in yellow and purple, which I assume was/is the colour of facings of the old Essex Regiment ?
Regards, John

Having just looked it up, you are correct. The Essex Regiment had ''pompadour purple'' facings.
Reading that particular article, it turns out that a John McDougall got a VC whilst serving in The Essex Regiment. Unfortunately not a relative but at least its the same clan. lol. Regards Phil
