Introduced in 1881 as part of the Cardwell Reforms which, in most cases, saw the disappearance of the Regimental numbers. Retained in service until the passing of Queen Victoria in 1901 and replaced over the period 1901-1902. In some instances officers continued to wear this pattern for many more years, particularly if retirement was imminent.
