Anyone recognise this? Googling the motto I'm sent to the NZ newspaper archive for 1891:

(article about 1/3rd the way down the page, text highlighted ) which appears to describe this badge as being the [Canterbury?] Honorary Reserve Corps.
any comments New Zealand?

Looks very similar to the Scottish Horse (Waipu) Mounted Rifles, illustrated in Oldham. Your lion seems to have more detail that the badge illustrated, the Torse has a very different pattern, and the font is a lot thicker.

Many thanks chaps. I only have the 1st edition of Corbetts book on NZ badges.

Were they made in white metal and brass? The one I have is white metal.

having a look around (now that I have something to search for) here is atillathenunn's post from 5 years ago with an old pic of it being worn.

Hi Mike,
As far as I know the Waipu badge was only in brass/gilding metal.

Your reference to the Honorary Reserve Corps opens up a new possibility for me. Thanks for finding that newspaper article.

Note that my collar badge is in white metal but the Waipu trooper shown in the link you provided is wearing the generic bugle collar badge.
Addition: Trooper has two collar badges, one of which may be the smaller version of the hat badge.

Keep the book! It was only done in a limited edition I'm told. Horrible purple dust jacket though....

Any possibility this is 'blackened'? I can't decide if it is jut very dirty or there's an applied finish there? Was blackening a thing for NZ insignia at this time ?

Hi Mike,
Blackened badges not the norm in New Zealand. in WW1 some units, mainly Mounted Rifles blackened their badges. Other units eg. Rifle Brigade had blackened badges.
I think I would clean your badge too.

The snippet mentions a helmet plate with a monogram surrounded by laurel leaves.

Here is a shooting team with a sergeant wearing this badge, most probably Sergeant Wakelyn who won the Ballinger Belt in 1896.
