Default 12 Battalion (Bermondsey) East Surrey Regiment

Hello,

I'm looking to buy some badges from my Great Uncles regiment the 12 Battalion (Bermondsey) East Surrey Regiment but I need helping sorting the fakes from the genuine. Can anyone help?

Thanks,

My son and I have been researching my grandfather and two great uncles who fought in ww1. We visit France or Belgium twice a year to walk the battle fields and visit the places they fought.

The cap badge for all the East Surrey Regiment battalions with the exception of the 6th was the same as the regulars. 12th (along with the 7th, 8th & 9th) were a WW1 Service Battalion and it's possible their collar badges may have differed by being the pick & shovel type. The 13th, another Service Battalion also from Bermondsey wore unique collars with the coat of arms of the Borough.

Just down the road from me.

One of my Great Uncles Mark Stephen Gliddon was in 12 Battalion (Bermondsey) East Surrey Regiment. Three Gliddon brothers signed up they lived in Tooley St, Devonshire Building?

I have walked his battles at St Eloi and around Ypres.

What about these badges?

Regards,

John

The cap badge is correct for the 12th.

Collar badges were not worn during the war as a rule but the pioneer battalions and the pals collars shown for the 13th were one of those exceptions.

The 12th (Bermondsey) Battalion wore collar badges depicting the arms of Bermondsey. The 13th was the Wandsworth Battalion.

You’re correct, I’ve titled my Bermondsey collars photo wrongly as 13th.

The 13th Wandsworth Battalion wore a unique cap badge also.

You're probably aware, scans of and transcripts of the battalions War Diaries are here:

I have a bit of an interest in the battalion as my grandfather was in "B" Coy of the 12th East Surreys.
