Interesting that the plastic buckled straps are right for the past 30 -40 odd years. I never knew that, I'm surprised
The only buckle variation I've come across is the use of a small rectangular static metal fitting replacing one of the buckles so that only that one buckle is adjustable.
And even more annoyingly the HC buttoned to the Blues & Royals has a plastic buckle that's inside out.
(police helmet has plastic straps)

Is it inside out, or one of those rectangular fittings linking the sections of strap rather a sliding buckle proper?

Both buckles inside out. And yes I did have to climb up my bookshelves again.

Sell. if they're both inside out, take it off and put it on the right way around. try not to stretch the slits cut in the strap though.

I may have mentioned previously how clumsy I am, there is no way I'm fiddling with it. I will do damage. Enough stress today carrying a plastic grenade a few feet to put in a case without breaking it. And I have already broken a glass display case this week.

Mischief managed I assume?

Back to the matter at hand, all my caps have metal chinstrap buckles, though most date to before the noughties and perhaps even before the 90's. A few have plastic chinstraps but the buckles are metal.

Hi Jerry, mischief always managed where I'm concerned
Yes I'm wondering if this is a relatively new addition, as I say most of my caps are pretty modern, but would be good to have an idea of when there was a change.

A plastic grenade? A replica grenade or a grenade cap badge?
If OC says he had plastic buckles in the 70's I'd not disregard his info though as I've said, I've only been aware of them on police cals, and only saw a few a dozen years ago.

RAF '83-'92 -I think I noticed plastic buckles during my time, I had two straps on my caps, one around the back for use in windy weather-(front one stayed in place) and made sure they matched (both had metal buckles). So I would guess they came into use around 1990. Regards, Paul.

Thanks Paul that's really helpful.
I have an RAF officers cap and it's a very modern one with the soft plastic buckles.

The strap around the back - was that an additional you fitted over the buttons, or one that was sewn into the sweatband, as per police caps?

For what it's worth, I can confirm the 2 different patterns of caps worn during my RAF service (1968-78).
The earlier pattern (stiff, wired) had black plastic strap and brass buckles, painted black.
The later pattern (soft, officer's type, no wire), had black plastic strap and ferrous metal buckles, painted black.
I need to hunt out the Station Order informing re the change.
