Essex National Reserve
I came across the attached which has made its way over to Australia. Apologies for the poor scan quality, the full size is a little better than the thumbnail. It is I think brass and has a brooch pin , which looks original rather than replacing lugs.
I had not heard of the National Reserve but found some info at: http://www.1914-1918.net/reserve.htm This site suggests that reservists would form Protection Companies attached to the TF Battalions - which in this case would be the Essex Regiment? But the badge is identical to the Essex Yeomanry cap / collar (KK1391) except that the circlet motto is replaced with Essex National Reserve. Can anyone shed any light on either the National Reserve and/or the history of this badge please? I would be very interested to learn more. Thank you in advance Michael |

Hi the badge in the centre of the strap is just the county badge of Essex. Infact the Essex Regiment at times just wore the shield as a collar badge. The similarities to the Essex Yeomanry is just a coincidence. I suspect this is just a lapel badge worn to show a man was doing his bit and not shirking! Hope this helps Graham

Veteran Reserve
Hi,
Thought this may help you. 11.03.11. WO Circular, Memorandum No321 approved the wearing of badges denoting their county, at the expense of local TAFA by Veterans Reserve, who did not have uniforms, and those cadets wearing or adopting uniform, . 9.11. Veteran Reserve retitled National Reserve. AO 240/11. 17.03.16. National Defence Coys (NDC) formed, absorbing Supernumary Coys of National Reserve. 1.22. National Reserve formally abolished. AO 7/22. refers. I beleive the idea was to recruit old soldiers into a reserve army on the cheap. They had no uniforms, pay or training commitment but gave their word to serve in times of national trouble. Their role was one of home defence, much like the National Defence Corps & Home Defence battalions of the late 1930's. Badges to the VR can be found for many Counties. As Essex was the largest geographical county in England it recruited more volunteers then elsewhere. proportionately more of their insignia turns up. Steve. |

Graham, Steve,
Many thanks for your information, it is very much appreciated. I'm guessing they took the EY badge as a simple pattern to adapt for the Reserve. Anyway, a nice diversion to go with the main collection! Thanks again Michael |

Hi Expat Yeoman,
The National Reserve Badge can be found to many counties.I've just started collecting them to the Welsh Counties and they are of the buttonhole fitting in enamel and metal with a Crown or County Device in the centre. I have the Glamorgan,Breckonshire and Monmouthshire and as been already said they are make a nice diversion from my main collecting interest. Regards Bantam |
