Default Bullion Patch To Identify

hi guys
came accross this patch and have no idea what it may be. it was with a bunch of british artillery and engineers stuff.
is it british or maybe french?

I think it could be either Spanish or Italian.

The shape would suggest a lapel tab - I concur with the previous posts on origin. David
