Default 17th/21st Lancers brass motto, any good?

Hello,
While going through my mottos for a different thread I came across this one, I had it question marked as I don't think it's right, what do the motto experts think please?
Your time and help are appreciated as always.

As these were bought privately and not issued what would you define as right? The wearing of blackened brass ones is relatively modern but various ones have been worn over the last 20 years.

Hi Alan O,
I thought the only brass mottos were the WW1 economy badges, I didn't know there was a different type of brass one, and I have no idea of this particular motto if it's a copy or fantasy.

This is a fallacy perpetuated in John Gaylor's book. The official records of which badges were authorised to be produced in brass do not include the 17th lancers motto.

The 17/21 and the QRL did wear blackened brass mottos on exercise and operation including the QRL's last Afghanistan tour. This was by no means universal and both w/m and blackened brass were worn along side each other.

Is it Gaylor or K&K that mention bronzed badges being worn by 17L during WWI? Or have I just made that up?

Both books mention it. K&K also lists a number of brass badges in the cavalry section that were not authorised for production as 1916 economy ones.

Whether the regt bought their own brass ones for other ranks, or K&K/Gaylor are actually recording officers bronzes as ORs badges, is not clear.

This photo is 1914-19 and the w/m badge and collars are visible:

Hello all

I have a blackened white metal Motto received from the regiment in the 80's that was used in Oman by officers on secondment.

I also have a gun metal Motto by the London Badge and Button Co that was used in Northern Ireland.

I hope that this helps.

Regards Phil.
