Default Today is Anzac Day - 25th April, 2014

Today is Anzac Day - 25th April, 2014.

This is the 99th Anniversary of the landings at Gallipoli.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

Lest We Forget

Lest we forget!

The attendance at this morning's Dawn Service here in our little community was quite incredible. It was wonderful to see such interest.

Large crowd at our local ANZAC Day service and great community spirit. Very proud to be witness to reflection and remembrance. Ithaca in 1922 when the war memorial was built for 600 pounds wasn't even part of Brisbane and yet you can walk into the city easily from here. 116 names on the memorial.

Lest We Forget

I echo those sentiments its just that I'm saddened by the fact that so few people seem to be aware that there were 12 line and 9 RND British battalions involved.

A long time since I was last at the dawn service in Kings Park, but I am there in spirit.

Default 15th Bn AIF

My wife's great uncle - 854 Sgt William Francis Hawkins 15th Bn AIF - landed at Gallipoli of the afternoon of 25 April 1915. He was - as a CSM in the same battalion - killed in action on 8 August 1915 at Sari Bair. He has no known grave but is remembered at Lone Pine and in the church at Ilminster, Somerset. He and his brothers emigrated to Australia in 1911 but prior to that he had served as a Private Soldier in 4th Bn Dorset Regt. These items turned up amongst my late mother in law's possessions in Australia a couple of years ago. We are very pleased that they survived. Mike

Even fewer people remember the tens of thousands of French troops who served and died in the Dardanelles;

Any relation to Samuel Hedley Hawkins of the 15th Battalion?

He was a neighbour when I was growing up in Brisbane.
