Default Canada Medals

I have a couple I believe have the wrong ribbons. Confusion arises as they changed the ribbon colour over the years. LSGC should be Crimson (same as VC) for the time period of these medals. On Veterans Affairs website it shows the Meritorious Service medal as crimson with 2 white edge bands but its description is crimson with white centre stripe. Which one is right? To add it states the LSGC for 1916 would be crimson with white centre stripe. Cheers Brian

Default Long Service and Good Conduct (Army) Medal

Brian

In my Medal Book, Canadian Orders, Decorations and Medals by Surgeon Commander F.J. Blatherwick, CD, the description of the ribbon is a crimson ribbon 1.25 inches wide, with a white centre stripe (0.125"). The ribbon looks to be the right one.

There were 150 awarded to the Canadian permanent army between 1902 and 1909.

These were earlier issue. Northwest 1885 was to Col. Sergt. W.P.Hewgill Q.O.R. , Meritorious service to S.M. (WO) W.P.Hewgill R.C.H.A. , LSGC to 1642 Q.M. Sergeant W.P. Hewgill R.C.H.A. Found another book that states the LSGC was Crimson with white middle stripe same as Meritorious? Cheers Brian

Hello Brian......

You have an extreamly rare pair of medals there..... There are only 3 known pairs of these medals, the LSGC and the MSM to Edward 7th with Canada Reverse......

Will try to attach a photo of my pair.....

I should also mention that the ribbon for both is the same......

Mike

Very nice display Mike. I found a copy of Blatherwicks book. LSGC should be the crimson ribbon with the white central stripeas shown in your pic. Meritorious service however should be crimson from 1902-1916. then 1916-1917 crimson with white edges, 1917 on crimson with white edges and centre white stripe. Different ribbons can be found on the LSGC as well depending on age and colonial forces. Cheers Brian

I also have a book on the Colonial MSM which states that in the period 1894 to 1906 that the ribbon would be the same as the LSGC...... Changed in 1916 to the standard MSM ribbon..... There were 50 of the Edward 7th MSM's of the 50 made only 28 were issued..... Eight were issued before 1904 then the Canadian Government realised that they had to pay an annuity and would not do so...... They did not issue any more till after 1909..... It also depends when your man was nominated for the medal and when it was issued..... If we knew all the answers there would be no fun in medal collecting......

Mike

Hello Bryan.....

Yes they are both Royal Canadian Field Artillery...... This is a one sided piece of bunting...... I have a strip of the bunting with a dozen of these and I thought it would make a nice background.... The other LSGC is a George V variety......
