'HQ UDR' slide
I was recently given access to a private NI collection which would put the NAM & IWM to shame, taking 30 yrs & millions of pounds to build.
One interesting item was a slip on UDR title unknown to me... HQ UDR Has any other member remember one of these, or perhaps wore one. There is NO question as to authenticity. |

I've been quietly collecting UDR slip ons and rank slides for some years and I have the following slip ons (no rank above, much smaller than rank slides):
UDR, 1UDR, 2UDR, 3UDR, 4UDR, 5UDR, 6UDR, 7UDR, 8UDR, 9UDR, 10UDR, 11UDR, 1/9UDR, 2/11UDR, 7/10UDR. I was lead to understand that the "UDR" slip ons were worn by Headquarters. Then again, whenever a new CO is appointed they tend to want change and I've seen some classics (non UDR) over the years: The USAF General who, being a staunch Catholic, decreed that patches with devils on were to be removed immediately. The introduction of rank slides with "SAS(V)" for the Territorial Army The introduction of a Mars and Minerva cloth cap badge for "non sabre personnel" in 21SAS Company flashes for 4 Para, worn on the left sleeve Company cravats in silk for 10 Para (1 Coy wore blue). None lasted much longer than the CO's posting. Ian H |

Quite right
'UDR' worn by HQ, most frequently seen on recruiters. You need a 4/6 UDR...I suspect 'HQ UDR' was worn early on by the looks of it, sorry no pic as yet but I'll try, problem is as soon as a pic appears it will be copied by the unscrupulous.
A recent MHS journal carried an good article with pics inc a number made after they ceased to be worn. |

HQ UDR wore the UDR title. I have never seen the HQ UDR title.

Marc,
I would have my doubts about that one! Interested to hear other opinions. Tim

I have seen 11 UDR & 2/ 11 UDR but not that one. It may have been a manufactures sample.

Did all UDR Battalions have a COP? Was this carried forward to the R IRISH (HS) Battalions? Tim

Tim,
I have never seen it on shoulder slip ons of any UDR battalion. I don't know about the Royal Irish Regiment home service battalions. Eddie |

The badge illustrated is a good copy, probably made from a photograph of my badge, ie worn by me c. 1985. The article in the MHS journal inc this badge was made up from a photo of mine when I refused to sell one of the two I was issued. We borrowed smocks from the D & D's in B'Kinlear.
The worse of the two I traded with the author of, 'Badge Backings & Special Embellishments Of The British Army', 1992, ISBN 0 9514342 0 9 Both slides being WELL ironed ! There was one Capt, one Sgt (deceased) two Cpl's, two L/Cpl's & eight toms. Morphing out of a Cambrian March team the 'platoon' spent 6 mths intensive training in addition to their normal permanent cadre training etc inc AT, RMA, some did Para (not P Coy) basic diving et al...I ended up with 2 types of trade pay, I'd have needed to, we could do a BFT under time in FULL CEFO & 3 x 13 mile runs a week...who would dare cast an askance eye at the UDR after that...I even remember being on the QRF in Middletown with the Grenadier Guards & leaving a WO2 open mouthed with praise after having to tell me my men & I could clean the camp better than his own. |

The official history of Op Banner disgracefully terms the UDR, 'native levies' & another late 1980's history says the Regiment didn't work in South Armagh, funny that, our time on Slieve Na Bola & such like other salubrious localities seems to have eluded history. True by the early to mid 1970's the Regiment no longer patrolled place like Crossmaglen but one of my Cpl's ran out of ammunition there in the early days ! I'm a Chelsea 'out pensioner' now but still work for the MOD, one of my bosses has 11 clasps on his ACSMedal...that's 12 x 1,080 days + & he was decorated 3 times! In fact a number of my co workers were decorated...I won't even mention casualties except to say, for those interested check out the frank, NI Casualties, who counted?, who cared? on the British Medal Forum.
