Kevin,
Thanks, it was put together many years ago when the internet wasnt around and copies in less abundance. I realised later that it was but the photos are old. I sold the collection about 15 years ago. regards

Pals updated
Hi all,
Well another Pals Battalion shoulder title added (4th) Salford Pals, 20th Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers (Westlake 942). Another on its way to me to replace a part title I have but not surprisingly 2nd and 3rd Birmingham Pals and genuine Lonsdale cap badges still represent gaps. Added in 25th (Frontiersmen) Royal Fusiliers sweetheart badge and like to have them done for 110th anniversary of formation but that isn't the main driver. Cheers Dean

Slowly but surely wins the race mate! You’ll get there.
You need to get yourself one of these to go with the Cardiff City Bn collars. I spotted this one as a sleeper in this mixed lot on eBay earlier this week. |

Luke.
You sure your happy with the badge ? Is it brass or w/m as genuine ones only came in brass, the badge is also to well struck. Ta Jonathan |

Yes I’m delighted with it. It is very much brass.
Has exactly the same notch out of the top left hand corner of The Welch scroll, same smooth undersides of plume tips as yours here: https://www.britishbadgeforum.com/fo...7&d=1454761444 and here: https://www.britishbadgeforum.com/fo...ht=Welch+brass It is also from the same die, looped in the correct position etc. etc. It isn’t particularly well struck, the sellers photos made it look a better strike than it is. I’m 100% certain it’s genuine. The reverse of you badge is I’m pretty sure fairly heavily coated in something - original bronzing finish and maybe old lacquer too? Whereas this one has been stripped back to brass sadly. The different tones you can see on the back in the above pic are I believe the last traces of the original finish and whatever solvent was used to strip it refracting the light. Lastly I’m yet to see a repro of one of these, I’m sure it will happen at some stage, but this is a little known badge outside this forum. I don’t even think Bosley’s acknowledged it or have sold one. Nor is it recorded in any of the main badge collecting literature. Last edited by Luke H; 16-05-21 at 12:51 AM. Luke.
As you say nice original badge, why I did query it was that in the first feed the badge look strongly as if w/m and not brass. Agree yours has been cleaned hence sharper reverse than ours, the badge was produced by the same company that made the collars, hence the “jelly mould” appearance to the back of our uncleaned/unstripped badge (sonic cleaner is all that’s needed to clean a badge in my opinion). Bosley does now know of the badges existence as told him about it a few years ago when he sold a collar badge for us, he wasn’t aware of it at that time mind you. So seems as if you got a bargain (still out there if you got a keen eye), can’t say if you be lucky enough with a pair of original collars mind you for a bargain price or a 38th division patch for a complete set. Here you go. The cap and collars came together from the family of the man who wore them.

Thanks Johnathan. Slightly embarrassed to admit I’ve 2 of the cap badges and 3 collars, albeit one (ex-Professor Charles Thomas collection) is damaged and possibly plated but it looks lovely to me. As I’m not a cloth collector I’ll quit here whilst I’m ahead .
Kevin as always very nice. |
