Kimberley Regt badge not in Owens
Hi all
Found this at a antique fair this last weekend up in Johannesburg. It appears to be a "field cast" badge, but very well made! At first I thought it was a normal Kimberley Regt badge that had had it's outer parts ground off but on close inspection there is no sign of grinding, filing or sanding. There were 2 of these but it was purchased by another collector who had the other in his hand whilst I was at the stall, he only collects one of a kind hence I was able to pick this interesting badge up! Do any other Forum members have one? Brian |

Brian,
Did the Kimberly's wear the universal pattern star type QVC helmet plate? It looks so much like same for the British plate, which was also worn on the glengarry. See here: http://www.britishbadgeforum.com/arm...lmet_plate.htm A possibility! Rgds, button_guru --------------------------- Buttons aren't just a hobby.................. |

Hi there
Yes, I must say it does look like a helmet plate centre however Kimberley Regt as it is was only formed after the Victorian era I believe around 1907. Thanks Brian |

Hi Brian, the fittings on the back don't look like the fittings of a helmet plate centre. The shape and size does look right for that. It also looks cast. I think it needs looking into. Regards Andrew

Hi Brian, after looking again, I think that it is likely a WW2 casting of 201/204 in Owen, only retaining the centre piece. The mould was likely made from a badge that had the outside cut off. Regards Andrew

My thoughts exactly, very nice and unusual and for a casting a lot better than normal. I am sure there must be more around just hoping someone here has one. Always nice to find something different. Regards Brian |

Kimberley Regiment was raised in 1890 when the Victoria Rifles and Kimberley Scots were amalgamated to form KR. The badge of KR has not changed significantly over the years. The only way to identify a Victorian up to 1939 era cap badge is in the voiding of the centre piece as you have it in your cast badge. There is no voiding between the wreath and the "ring" in later versions (after 1939).
KR have had a Pipe Band from the early days. Perhaps this is a locally made Plaid Badge? |
