weekend reading
Well, this arrived ok -
A 1915 Aldershot publication called "Protection" (Advanced, Flank and Rear guards) Basically a handbook for the regular troops, given the writing style and approach. It's an interesting read, not least because it shows the tactical ideas in use in 1914, 1915 and how the Command predicted warfare in the early stages of the war. The prominent use of cavalry, scouts, flanking would have made this booklet pretty useless by mid 1915, but it's an interesting look at how the soldiers were to prepare for war, prior to the total dig-ins. And of course, after 1918 and the breakthroughs, the change in warfare with tanks, and firepower would again render much of these regulations obsolete. There's even an interesting Q&A section. A glimse into a bygone world. Colin
