Default SAS Rand Pipe Band

Hope you find this interesting. Not often seen is the glengarry badge of SAS Rand, the pipe band of the SA Navy, based in Johannesburg. See links:1) http://www.navy.mil.za/newnavy/naval...erve_units.htm (2) http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gi...all!/photo.php

On the Facebook link there are 2 pictures of band members in all their Scots regalia.

I am sure Alex will enjoy this. I see there is a "Pipers Project" however not sure how to add the badge to the thread?

Regards
Brian

Hi Brian
Yes, very nice. I have the same glengarry in my collection which I acquired when the band closed down a few years ago.
Cheers,
Alex

Incredible just where pipe bands turn up,when trying to find out more about a buttons maufacturer yesterday I came across a web site with information on Irish Pipe bands including those formed by the IRA.

I am always surprised at the countries some of the Pipe Bands who take part in the Edinburgh Tattoo come from.

"..... there's some corner of a foreign field that is forever England," should have read Britain.

Hi Aad
Thanks for the list, that's more than I imagined. Do you know if the RN Division pipe band was the WWI RND?
Thanks. Cheers,
Alex

Alex,
I don't know where I got the information, but searching on google now for "royal naval division pipe band" I found an article by "Marcher" on www.royalmarinesbands.co.uk which mentions: " A brief account in a 1917 copy of 'The Globe and Laurel' refers to a bagpipe band in one of the Royal Naval Division Battalions who were referred to as the 'Bagpipe Marines' ".
So they existed during WW1 but I have no idea when this Pipe Band was established or disbanded.

Hi Aad
Thanks for that info, I'm sure it would have just been WWI then, as the RND was a WWI raised division.
Cheers,
Alex
