Strange Highland Light Infantry shoulder title
Another broken shoulder title only purchased because it was unusual. As far as I can make out, it is a standard H.L.I. shoulder title with lugs intact, brazed to a backing plate which has also had a standard light Infantry bugle, lugs removed, brazed to it. The top of the backing plate has broken off but possibly had a T and a number above the bugle at some time.
I find it hard to believe that soldiers would have been allowed to wear them in this fashion but what other reason for their manufacture can there have been? |

Is that bugle appropriate for HLI, wouldn't their S/T bugle have been the generic little stringed bugle used as collar, S/T and Buglers arm badges?

Not necessarily, Westlake 1357 and 1358 show this type of bugle in use, albeit with HIGHLAND beneath it.

For myself, I find it hard to believe that this could have actually been worn in uniform.
Perhaps it was a starting piece for eventual assemblage into a trench art piece or something similar? Who knows.... CB |

Indeed, I am wondering if an apprentice jeweller or badge faker, was given a batch of old shoulder titles to practice their brazing skills on. This Territorial officer's 'T' that was in the same batch, certainly raises the possibility.
