I wonder why this SSM doesnt have the Regimental 'Chad' displayed upon his chevrons?

I seem to recall that SSM did not wear the ugly thing at that time. Only Sgt. and Cpl.?

Not surprising that the SNCO retains his pill box hat unless the recruits wearing the brodrick in the 1905 picture posted in the Cavalry section!
