Default Fifties SAS wing

Friends,

See nice fifties pattern SAS wing I picked up last week.

Notice the rather bright shades of blue and neat shape with little pointed underside.
The reverse material is hessian.

Also note colour differences and similarities when comparing the same wing to other private purchase fifties wing in
picture on the right hand side.

The other pattern is more purplish and there is no colour difference between the inner wing area and the rigging line
area.

I would have thought earlier this pattern of wing was WW2. The stitches over the rigging lines and the general way of
manufacturing however point at the fifties. This pattern is fairly rare.

I would be interested to see if Forum members have samples of similar 50-ies wings.

Cheers,

Johan

Hi Johan,

I don't have any similar 50's wings to show, but that is a very nice looking wing you have just acquired. To me it is most similar in design to the top one in your other photograph, although the shade of colours and type of thread used appear different.

Cheers,
Jack.

Default wings compared

hi Jack,

You are perfectly right because it was actually the same wing under slightly different light (I have since changed the picture to make it more clear).

I was meaning to compare the differences in the 2 patterns: top one with single shade of purplish dark blue and without the pointed underside.

I believe the newly acquired variant is a bit older, possibly of Malayan origin, but not sure of that. Would be interested to hear more views.

Cheers,

Johan

Default Wing worn in Malaya

Friends,

See picture I received from James MacKenzie of a parachute wing worn by Rhodesian C Squadron officer in Malaya.

Clearly family of the wings with stitches over the rigging lines. What is remarkable is how thin the outer wing layer is at the bottom part.

Also, interesting to see how it was attached to his uniform!

Cheers,

Johan
