Star badges, Who?
These "star" badges belong to who? Are they RCMP? Or dress blues?

My first thought is 5 Year Service Stars for the RCMP.

Identical to the star I wore as a Master Cadet on my school's Patrol uniform in the 1970s.

They could be British Civil Defence, wartime or postwar.

Stars
Bill
For comparison, here are some stars that I have on my board that are RCMP issue. When I got 5 years of service, I was issued ones that were identical in the pattern but smaller. If you have the book by Boulton, on page 500, there is a picture of assorted stars that were issued to the RCMP over the years. Unfortunately it is black and white. Jack |

Thanks all. I suspected they were RCMP, but wished to confirm. Hi Rob, they came from a lot of badges, all Canadian and post war period, which likely eliminates the possibility that they are Civil Defence.

Aren't the RCMP services stars in a bullion thread?

Rob, your not wrong, it is about as close to a British Civil Defence star as you could ever want - i have a copy in my hand and the stitching is a dead match to Bills image. That said, i have seen a lot of these here in Canada and so they must have been issued here to someone also - i had suspected the RCMP. Would be interested to see the reverse of Bills copy. I have a few Canadian ones also i should dig out to get a better look at.

The present day issue RCMP service stars are not bullion thread. Members put them on their Red Serge by purchasing them privately from various sources. Jack |

Hi Jack, (Guess we shouldn't say that in an airport...), Do you know what orders of dress the stars are worn on?
Here is an image of the back.

Stars
Bill
I am not sure what you are meaning by Order of Dress, are you talking about Review Order, etc? Going back into the 1950's, 1960's, the RCMP did issue stars that were made of bullion thread. Members put them on their Red Serge, Brown Serge and Blue Serge. They then went to the stars that you have on this thread, I will call them the large stars. I joined the Force in the early 1970's and they had changed from the large stars to the smaller version in the 1970's. I had 5 years service in 1977 and was able to put up a star then but only was issued the small ones. Your stars can be placed on any of the Serge's but a lot of members will go to a private tailor, in my case, I went to Gastaldo Tailors in New Westminster and purchased the Bullion Thread stars and had them put on my Red Serge. I had the smaller cloth stars put on my Brown Serge as it was working dress in the winter time, but in the 1970's wearing of the Brown Serge was discontinued and once the existing stock was issued, they were no longer issued. In my later years of service I was media trained and as a result was issued a Blue Serge, to be worn when standing in front of a camera. I had all my various accoutrements, stars, rank and shooting qualifications in bullion thread. So I guess the short answers is it is up to the member as to what he puts on his Serge, cloth or bullion thread. I hope that has answered your question. Jack |

Thank-you Jack. Orders of dress is a military term for different types of uniforms, so blue patrol uniform, battle dress, shirt / bd trousers were different orders of dress. Your description as to the different uniforms is exactly what I was asking.

The currently army cadet program qualification badges are similar, in green, red, silver, and gold, with a new, large master cadet badge.
