Default LB&BCoLtd "SILVER" Motto?

Hi All

I purchased this the other day for a modest sum and its just arrived...

It is marked "SILVER" and has a good weight in the hand..... on dipping it in Goddards silver dip there was no reaction. Hmmmmm not a good sign...... but I got some brasso wadding and gave it a once over and cleaned it off with some soap and water. Suddenly the feel of the motto was different..... a rubbery plastic feel...... thats a tell tale sign of varnish..... and a thick layer at that.

So the next step is to give it blow torch to remove that layer of gunk.

Total fake..... no silver...... one of the loops started to wobble showing through a low grade yellow braze. The metal is bending as if it has some lead content in it.... That plastic surface feel was obviously the lead content.

Good learning curve for me...... this is a good fake.

Hello Griff,
Where is the maker, I cannot see it on the reverse.
Regards Frank

There is a certain individual on our favourite auction site who marks some of his wears "silver". Did it originate from that source?

Dave.

No... that purveyor of goods is an easy spot.

I will say that this is a pretty good fake.... the back image is convincing. Some thought has gone into it. The weight was good..... but closer inspection under the magnifier gave me some red flags. Once the heat was on it.... for not very long ..... it was obvious.

I had not seen this one before..... so I took a punt. All part of the game

There is a genuine un-marked silver out there from LB&BCoLtd (as shown below)..... this has a back image that follows the ORs. So my thoughts on buying the one above was that it was an earlier strike.
