This pattern of badge is based on the design worn by No.2 Commando (Officers in metal) in beret, all ranks silver bullion on black - BUT not with the word COMMANDO over the top. This pattern design was adopted as a Commando Association Old Comrades badge - for use by generic units, from which members were drawn - the badge illustrated is not of WW2 era. Fakers have also produced this pattern badge with no connection to the Commando Old Comrades Association.
I hope this helps

For examples of genuine commando insignia please refer to The Commando Veterans Association (a later day organisation) photographic archive
http://gallery.commandoveterans.org/cdoGallery/main.php - see the 'Commandos in WW2' album etc
