The first RCN Cap Ribbon ?
I think it is fitting that the first post in the RCN section of the board be the first cap ribbon (tally) worn in the RCN. HMS Rainbow was a 19 year old cruiser acquired from the Royal Navy in 1910. She was commissioned into Canadian service on August 4, 1910 as HMCS Rainbow and was the first "major" ship to serve in the fledgling Royal Canadian Navy. Rainbow served in the Pacific during the First World War and was decommissioned in 1917. The cap ribbon is standard for the period and has been worn. The original owner's name "EVANS" is painted on the back in accordance with dress instructions.

HMCS Rainbow
Yes that is certainly a rare item for sure John! I too have some WWI ribbons & will show them in time.
I have a couple early RPPC photos of HMCS Rainbow of the same period & will attempt to attach to this post. I also collect any RPPC or CDV of any WWI era RCN ship or sailor. This RPPC is in colour but I have submitted a b&w version. Its a commercial card printed by Valentine & Sons, Montreal & Toronto. Bryan |

Dont know why the previous RPPC of HMCS Rainbow came out so small - perhaps someone can advise how to make the photo larger?
However, here is another RPPC of the old Graving (dry) dock at HMCS Naden, with what could be HMCS Rainbow entering the dock. Bryan Last edited by RCN; 03-02-08 at 06:28 PM. Reason: postiing photo |

Hi Chaps, moved the medal subject into the "other Militaria" area
...chopped off and as a new thread. http://www.britishbadgeforum.com/for...read.php?t=560 hope you don't think I'm being too savage, but someone mentioned the change of subject. - think they want to carry on here with cap tallies.! please feel free to add militaria/medals threads in that section the "photo / CDVs of insignia in use" section is a good idea and will add the same to the Canada zone. Some would say they could be absorbed in the other sections, but personally I think they deserve a place of their own, and you can always link to them from posts elsewhere.

Cap Tallies
Wonder if you can help me pls? We have a 1/2 doz cap tallies mounted in a frame that we were given some years ago. The first one mounted and the only question I have is 'HMCS MAGNIFICENT' our first aircraft carrier. Is it rare? I've never seen this one before.
Tks Al |

H.M.C.S. Magnificent is not particularly rare. I believe I bought mine from Migory's years ago.
Most Canadian cap tallies encountered seem to be for ships that were in service in the mid-1960s. Particularly Town Class, River Class and the destroyers/escorts. I would suggest listing all of the tallies you have as there may be some scarce ones. Phil |

Tks Phil. As I said we only have 6/8 of them but I'll do it and post.

Mention should also be made of the A/C's HMS Nabob & Puncher. Both of these A/C's were RN but were largely crewed by Canadians serving in the FAA. Many of these Candians were Air branch ratings. Both saw service in 2WW & Nabob was torpedoed by U354 in the Barents Sea on 22 Aug '44. She made Scapa under her own steam on Aug 27 but was paid off on Oct 10 as considered not worth repairing. Tks Bryan; good info. Appreciate the update. My Dad served on the Bonny in the early 60s so I have that tally of course.
