You got me mate, never seen one of these before!

I dont think its UK & am pretty sure its not RCN.

I know the reef knot was used in USN. I think it was recruiting or basic training - something like that.

It came with a lot out of a WW11 VET SCRAPBOOK of USN items but was told by folks on another forum it was not recognized as US.

Paul,

In Guido Rosignoli's "Naval and Marine Badges and Insignia of world War 2" U.S. Naval section Plate 45 it shows two diagrams. The knot by itself is listed as "Ex-Apprentice". Further down on the page it shows an "S" inside a diamond which is "Shore Patrol". I realize it it not a match to the patch you have but it may give a hint. That being said, maybe your patch is for an Apprentice Seaman?

Michael

I have never seen any reference that indicated that Captains of Foretop, Maintop, Mast, Hold, etc etc wore any kind of distinguishing badge. They would have of course worn their rate badge if applicable: ie: Seaman Gunner, Gunlayer, etc.

Can you post a pic of this ref Paul?

Default Is it Naval at all?

A friend of mine has suggested that it may have something to do with Scouts or another type of youth movement?

He doesn't recognise it and he runs naval-history.net.

Happy hunting!
