I dont think its UK & am pretty sure its not RCN. I know the reef knot was used in USN. I think it was recruiting or basic training - something like that. Bryan |

It came with a lot out of a WW11 VET SCRAPBOOK of USN items but was told by folks on another forum it was not recognized as US.

Paul,
In Guido Rosignoli's "Naval and Marine Badges and Insignia of world War 2" U.S. Naval section Plate 45 it shows two diagrams. The knot by itself is listed as "Ex-Apprentice". Further down on the page it shows an "S" inside a diamond which is "Shore Patrol". I realize it it not a match to the patch you have but it may give a hint. That being said, maybe your patch is for an Apprentice Seaman? Michael

I have one ref saying the knot means capt of foretop. with the S for senior ?

NO to small and in an old volume that will split on the bed sorry, but show the know and am guess ing on the S because have seen this elsewhere in US traditions

Is it Naval at all?
A friend of mine has suggested that it may have something to do with Scouts or another type of youth movement?
He doesn't recognise it and he runs naval-history.net. Happy hunting! + Anthony
