What to make of this? Appears white metal with slider!

Very odd indeed, never seen one facing the wrong way.

Its plated though, nickel or chrome.

Also appears to have once been on loops with the remnants visible.

Looking closely it is possibly made from an NCOs gun right arm badge (hence the stubs of loops E-W) with the upper scroll and crown and the lower scroll from a 'normal' gm badge very carefully brazed on. It is probably nickel plated with a hairpin slider.

Possibly unique rather than UBIQUE - but why was it made?

Yes Tim, I reckon its been nickel plated to hide the braze ?

Yes I agree that the plating covers the brazing making it difficult to see the join (to misquote the late Eric Morecambe).

No, the closest is a sleeve gun with crown added.
