Northamptonshire Rifle Volunteers -6th Corps Peterborough?
A recent CDV which turned up showing a Rifle Volunteer in a Studio pose with a Photographers name of J Bull, Peterborough.
Bearing in mind that Peterborough was part of the County of Northampton until 1974 and using Westlake's Rifle Volunteers Book as a reference it shows The 6th Corps of The Northamptonshire Rifle Volunteers were formed at Peterborough on 3rd March 1860. The Volunteer shown wears a blackened numeral 6 on the low shako style cap and a cross belt plate which unfortunately lacks enough detail for a positive identification. Could anyone confirm the identification of the Unit in question please, a long shot probably as I imagine other Volunteer Units may well have used a '6' on the cap but coupled with the Peterborough Studio location it seems a possible identification option. Simon. |

Can't help with identification but found details of the photographer , other photos with the text "By J Bull Peterborough" date to the 1860's . By the 1870's the text changed to "John Bull Peterborough".
The reverse of photos had the text "John Bull Portrait and Landscape Photographer City Road, Peterborough." .

Mike,
That's a great help, thank you, narrows down the date to coincide with the Formation date of the 6th Corps. Regards, Simon. |
