Sun or Star(?) Above Gun Barrels Above Flamed Grenade "Badge".
Does anyone know what this is please?
It measures 41mm high × 34mm wide, is cast from copper or bronze and weighs 24 grams. I don't know what the top symbol is - a representation of the sun or a star perhaps? Perhaps a centre piece from a cross belt, pouch or headgear badge, or a piece of horse harness furniture? Presumably it's connected to an artillery unit. Possibly to the Ordnance Regiment which was formed in 1685 and armed with fusils as escort to the artillery and 1751 became the Royal Fusiliers? It may not be British but Im told that was originally found by a detectorist from the East Midlands / South Yorkshire. |

Leigh,
It looks like a badge worn on the front of the French Adrian helmet, perhaps artillery or ordnance related, as you suggest. I can't check as my books are all packed at the moment after moving house. George Last edited by conservator; 08-11-21 at 11:59 AM. |

Thanks, I see what you mean but I think it's a bit small for that?
I've only seen such badges die struck rather than cast, and this has no signs of lugs having been fitted. |

I have one that's similar that I'd identified as a French helmet badge, some years ago. Check online,, there must be a reference.

I have googled a fair bit re. this though not specifically re. Adrian type badges.
I've not noted this design before and as I said, it seems smaller than an Adrian badge would be and doesn't appear to have had any form of fixings. I'll Google again, and book check Adrian style helmets of various nationalities. By "similar", how similar please, design, size, construction? |
