Default A good start for the year.

I have just bought this beauty from Geoff Newman a great addition to my 1st Cheshire VB collection. I hope the rest of the year is as good.

Mercian,

A lovely plate, when I collected to the Cheshires I had an example but the crown had been changed very professionally to a kings crown.

Was that a simple contemporary case of waste not, want not?

Frank,

I would think so, I have seen crowns changed before but not normally when the design of the badge had been superseded.

A picture of the back of a Kings Regiment helmet plate which has had the crown replaced is attached, you can see where there are the stumps of previous lugs on the back of the crown so they even used an old crown.

Hello Peter,
Very nice indeed, they certainly had to be paid for so I can fully understand why this sort of thing occurred from time to time, a far cry from todays throwaway society and lets face it, this sort of thing did not come cheap, even back then.
Regards Frank

Peter,

Why would a KC version exist for a badge that was was only worn upto 1887 when they became the 1st VB. ?

regards

Simon,

As I said in post #5 : I would think so, I have seen crowns changed before but not normally when the design of the badge had been superseded.

The crown was neatly replaced, the rest of the plate being original, so I think the question is, why was a badge that was worn up to 1887 altered after 1901 ?

I don't know the answer in this case but perhaps a family item worn by successive family members of the unit ( as you will know it is not uncommon for swords to be passed down through a family )

P.B.
