As an aside,, I first came across this systematic habit of some individuals overpolishing part of a badge in wear when I joined the RAF. For some reason it was not frowned upon that the central 'RAF' lettering be polished smooth while the rest of the badge subjected to normal polishing (referring to brass badges). The issue of a/a badges naturally put a stop to this malpractice.
To my mind, all parts of a badge design are of equal importance and any extraneous highlighting is sheer ignorance. GTB |

Re Bullshine : Not badges I know, but the brass buckles and sliders of a 37 Pattern belt would be buffed with a piece of cardboard and brasso, and the sliders hammered flat to perfect the shine!
Woo betide the individual who did not clean the inside brass keepers or left blanco on them or the rear brasses... even the end keepers on rifle slings. Back to badges :, the rear keeper plate of AA Collar Badges were still brass as well so an element of bullshine carried on well into later years. |

None taken Regards, Paul. I expect the forum could come up with some interesting cases of over the top bull-whistle chains also look good with the chrome polished off to the brass...
