Default London Related Button For Id & Two Very Nice Christchurch Volunteers Buttons!

Hi all...

Have picked up several lots of buttons this week that I'm now sorting through. In the first lot I'm sorting I've got this nice looking one I'm unsure of if anyone can help? I'm guessing from the motto and arms it has something to do with London? It's a mounted button (think that's the term!) and it's back stamped FIRMIN & SONS STRAND LONDON so pre 1875 I believe. I'm thinking possibly a court button or similar but I might be way off!

Also in said lot I got these two very nice Christchurch Volunteer Artillery buttons c1800. Don't need help id'ing these obviously but thought I'd share as I understand they're pretty rare?

As per norm these will be for sale at some point.

Thanks, Phil

Hi Phil

The first button is Lord Lieutenant of the City Of London, they were worn for many years (QVC & KC) and possibly still are. That one probably dates c. 1850.s - 1870's, assuming it's " tunic size". I have both gilt & silver plate examples. I can't remember what the difference signifies off hand; perhaps one is worn by Deputy Lieutenants, if there are any in the City.

The Christchurch Vol Art buttons date from c.1806-1808 (according to the late Norman Litchfield, a noted RA collector).

Thanks for your help David. When I was researching the Christchurch buttons I found pictures of some of Norman Litchfield's collection when it was auctioned at DNW in 2006 and I have to say it was defiantly one mighty collection!

And Norman sold some very nice bits before the auction.

Hello

His book Buttons of the Royal Regiment of Artillery book is excellent too! If you have not got a copy there have been a few on ebay recently, from the same seller I think, but at a fairly hefty price, £40.00.

There is one on ebay at the moment - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BUTTONS-OF...oAAOSw8-tWVI-R

Glad I bought mine from Norman directly when it was first published.

I have no connection to the seller.

Regards
Roger

I think I bought mine from him at a militaria fair, can't remember how much it cost but it was a lot less than £40.

I wish I had bought copies of the other booklets he had available.

Decent chap, Norman, he was always willing to share his extensive knowledge.

David
