You might want to come back and edit out your email addresses from your posts once you are sorted. Unless you like spam forever that is.

Dave, thanks for your promptness and especially for your generosity in sharing. A lot of hard work and research has evidently gone into this specialised Collectors Reference project.

Hello:
interesting thread about RAF badges. Did this reference book get published? It sounds like something that I should have in my library. I have a question about the early months of the RAF. Did the OR's wear a cap badge of the RAF very similar to the ones from the inter war years and into WW2? If so are there tells to differentiate the very early badges from the later ones. What I am getting at was there an actual WW1 RAF brass cap badge?
Thank you
Don

I think the brass badge came into use just post war -1919. It then existed until the 'Queens Crown' version came into use. So sometime in the 1950s? Regards, Paul.

The RAF cap badge for ranks below WO1 did exist for a few weeks before the war came to a formal end, but, after the armistice, you would need a cap with a provenance to be sure, the badges do not differ in any significant way.

AMWO 545 of May 1919 refers to the badge on it's introduction for wear, the well worn example attached was worn by an original, direct enlistment, founding member of the RFC and subsequently the RAF, the Patrol Dress collars, worn for a very limited period in the thirty's, give you a size comparison.

It is great to have that provenance for the badge. It makes it a wonderful reference to have available. Thank you for posting the picture.

Well, to be quite honest, I think notwithstanding any AMWO's, it is all academic, whilst the cap badges were issued in the spring of 1919, the fact remains that the fabric crown and eagle cap badges continued in wear by many of those Airman who had been issued with them the year before for a surprising length in time, in some cases, well into the following decade.

Frank:
That would make sense to me as well. From my time in the service I know that any kind of badge changeover was a long slow process in spite of the overall plan. The senior folks always seemed to resist the change. I think all part of being an "original".
