5th Battalion Devonshire Regiment
I have both the all white metal and the blackened brass, both are voided as is K & K 1709. The regulars B/M badge is also voided and all sliders are plain.

One of the problems with badges, is that the average wearer never really looks closely at them, only those of us with an interest. I have met many ex-servicemen who could not describe the badge they wore in detail and had to drag it out to see what it looked like. A veteran who lost his badge would more than likely see a similar badge and swear it was the one he wore 20 years ago when a collector may know 100% that the particular badge wasn't in use at the time. The difference between a VB badge and a regular badge may have been lost on wartime servicemen who didn't know what the other badge looked like.

In a similar vein a pocket watch was sold at auction on yesterday's episode of 'Flog-it' (please don't judge me on that!) with a 'Boer war medal'
The watch was presented to a sailor on a ship involved in the war. The 'medal' was in fact a 9th Battalion London regt cap badge which was clearly post 1908 if not much later. Yet the family were convinced they both belonged to the naval rating and dated to the Boer war. |

Going back to the discussion on the 5th Battalion.
I picked this up in a mixed lot a month or so ago. It has a very ropey reverse with two replacement lugs being affixed with copious amounts of lead solder. The heat from the soldering process also looks to have stained the back in a few places. I can't see any remains of a slider ever being fitted. The construction is more die-cast than die-stamped. There looks to be tiny bits of extruded metal from the 'casting' process in the void between castle and quoit. My jury is very much out on this one - but it doesn't fit neatly in the Marsh fake category. Any thoughts? Mark |

I have similar replaced lugs on a BB Devon Badge. I have this WM example that may have been cleaned with a chemical- its very bright. Regards, Paul.

I’m happier with any TA, economy, etc that has blunter star points, that’s the first thing I look for.

Hello Keith. The WM badge I have posted-post 23- is very clean and the edge is actually reflecting the paper it is on giving the badge an outline which makes the badge look more pointed then it is- the reverse picture better shows shape. I think my badge is similar to ones shown by Alan O and Rob Miller.
Some pictures of a BB badge replaced loops similar to post 22- though on this badge the slider scar can be seen. P1070232.jpg P1070231.jpg P1070236.jpg P1070235.jpg P1070229.jpg P1070230.jpg Last edited by wardog; 17-01-21 at 01:04 PM. |
