Default Sharing a it of History - WWII GPR WS/Staff Sgt Desmond Ryans

I have only done this as a "sharing moment" and not for any other reason - and we haven't had many of these recently....

Included are some pictures of a WWII Glider Pilots beret, BD and a copy of Recommendation Form W.3121 for the DFM. I do not currently know whether he got it or not. Further research is required.

The beret (issued 1943) has a silver plastic GPR cap badge.
The BD is a 1940 pattern and stamped 1944.

The (award recommendation) paperwork mentions his participation and bravery during HUSKY, NEPTUNE and MARKET as well as his later NORTH RHINE landing - near WESEL - in March of 1945.

Enjoy, David

Default S/Sjt Ryans

I can confirm that Des Ryans was awarded his DFM as some years ago I spoke to his widow and do have a photograph of him somewhere if you'd like me to post it on the forum for you. As far as I can recall he was wounded at Arnhem but escaped back across the Rhine. I do have a fair bit of info on him if you'd like it.

Cheers

David,
Yet again, well done on another smashing acquisition, and very nice to see so much of the man's bits and pieces kept together. I wish I had the same knack as you at finding such good quality stuff!

Talk soon

John

JB,
Well...... thats possible but I would rather bring it out somewhere a little less busy than the usual cafe. The Portugese one under the main 'ville bus station at Place' Hamelius would be better......
I leave here on Saturday evening, but could come up tomorrow midday around
12/12:30.......
Let me know

David

Default Des Ryans DFM

As promised photo of S/Sjt Ryans. I think having a photo brings things like your collection of artefacts to life.

Cheers

Default When the forum works wonders

How great is it that through different sources the whole ensemble is as one would expect.
Great when the forum makes things like this happen.

Spot on. My sentiments exactly.
I have to assume that his DFM (and other medals) are either still with his family or possibly in the GPR museum. Must try and make a visit to it one day.
Thanks again to 'The Forum' i.e. Mike and members for making this happen.
