40th. Pathans
Pictured below is my latest ebay purchase. 3 very small 40th. Pathans badges. I am pretty sure they are native silver. My question is are they collars or were they worn somewhere else. John.

Hello John, i had a punt at these as well, they looked good to me.Im not to sure as to use,as you say and illustrate they are small and would appear to be collar badge size. It wasn't obvious before as to size but you have shown that with your 10p.The positioning of the lugs is a bit squint which re size i would think gives maximum width. That said always nice to see an 'Ali Barbar's' badge.I have added the picture of a desk ornament which has a folding stand to the rear. Regards Phil.

Aaarrgh! I was going to try for these as well, but missed the deadline for placing my bid! Not really sure if they are all collar badges or not. Sometimes the cap badges of Indian regiments ran quite small.
Nice aquisition and a rather scarce set of badges to say the least. CB |

40th. Pathans
Thank you both for your comments on the 40th. badges. About a month the same seller sold some more 40th. badges including two metal shoulder titles and I think at least two English hallmarked cap badges as well as two others, I was well and truly out bidded on that lot. John.

I have one that looks to be identical - soon to be surplus to requirements.
If the Khyber knives are silver and the shield blackened, size about 3x3.5 cm, then they are definitely 1903-1922 period. In fact, size is irrelevant, I just realize, because both prior to and after that period the regiment had different names. [40th Pathans was the official moniker, "The Forty Thieves" or "Ali Baba's Own" the nicknames.] |
