Fake maroon beret warning
For sale a 1942 beret from chairborne militaria.
Do not be fooled. It is not from 1942 or even from WW2, British Beret Basque used this type of stampings with a painted double diamond from the early sixties onwards. And no sensible SF dealer would sell a genuine 1942 maroon beret for just 1200 GBP. |

At least four holes and a fair bit of mothing.

If you look very carefully at the smudged date inside the lining it seems to be “1962” which should have alerted viewers of this item.

Beret basques stamped the wd & date around the side during the war, only moving it to the middle post war.

Having a quick close up of the inner, the date could be either 1942 OR 1962

I mentioned it to Jack this morning - he told me he had realised he made an error yesterday, and removed it from sale immediately. No deliberate intention to sell a bad one. Hoping the explanation is acceptable. I did not ask Jack, but think his items have a 30 day money back guarantee? Well worth pointing out any errors as there is so much to learn. Mike |

Mike I find that somewhat hard to believe. A man with around 20 years of experience under his belt as collector and dealer does know that the machine stitching around the inside is a postwar feature. He will know as well that Beret Basque did not use the stampings as found on the one on ebay. And as already mentioned, he will definately not sell the holy grail for 1200 GBP.

And if you look careful you will notice that the leather slider pocket has been removed.

Based on my reference files I can confirm that slider pockets (leather or cloth) were first used:
Beret Industries: 1955. British Beret Basque: 1954. Compton: 1955. Jalpotex: 1954. Kangol: 1955. Supak: 1953. I would love to hear of earlier examples. |

The list of changes entry. Bearing in mind that old stocks should always be used up first.
