Default 21st Lancers Sudan Plate

Morning Gents
I have for some time wondered about this plate its origins and wear and found nothing. All I know the Officers were so excited to receive there first battle honour these plates were ordered and made , However not for the other ranks ?.
Its pictured in David Rowes book, but again that dose not mean its right. Has any one got a picture of this plate in wear or any information on its order construction delivery dates ect ect . Will be at the Regimental Museum next week so any information to help in the hunt would be greatly received.
I am not dishing the plate I would like some concrete facts on it .

Default plate

Not mine Phil , Iam trying to find some History and proof of its existence. I have plenty of pictures of the other two plates just not this . It also seems odd that the Other ranks were never issued it?.

Best Mac

Default 21st Sudan Plate

Had another good Look through David Rows Book Interesting in the notes were He says no proof of its existence and may well be a non official plate. He also wonders at the missing coat of arms that are present on the former and Later plate.
Off to Home HQ on this one I think.

Mac

Perhaps of relevance,

Noted in WO359 Vol 10 p 255 during some recent research.

Plates GM AR Lance Caps 21st Lancers

ACD/Patterns/16
4.7.1900
Standard Patterns Deposited P. No. 4627a/1900, old no. 4627/1898

Change, cut from new die, the details of the Royal Arms corrected, the Honour “Khartoum” and the Imperial Cypher added in centre of plate below the Royal Arms and to the scroll the words “ (Empress of India’s)” are added between the “21st” and “Lancers”.

This is fig. 103 in Rowe & Carman.

The WO 359 entry indicates that this is the second officially issued O/R pattern plate the first pattern , 4627/1898 is almost certainly that shown in Rowe & Carman fig 121.

Presumably the only other die change for O/Rs was to change to the Imperial Crown and thus any other pattern, if worn, was unofficial.

John

AR = All Ranks
P= Pattern
GM = Gilding Metal
O/R = Other Ranks
WO = War Office
