Default The Pacific

Hi

I see they are doing a TV marathon of The Pacific over here. I really enjoyed Band of Brothers, but never got around to seeing this. I will have to record all 10 episodes, as I won't have the opportunity to watch them live. Has anyone seen the series? Is it worth recording and watching?

Cheers

Colin

Good day Colin,

While I have also not seen the whole series, I have seen enough clips off of YouTube to form an opinion. I feel if you liked "Band of Brothers" then you will probably enjoy this show. It appears to have the same high production values that made watching "BoB" a treat. While no expert, there seems to be an effort to get most of the details right regarding uniforms and equipment.

The show's script was based on several memoirs written by actual Marines that appear in the show. Eugene Sledge, who wrote "With the Old Breed"; Robert Leckie, who penned "Helmet For My Pillow"; and Chuck Tatum, who wrote "Red Blood, Black Sand" (his book provided info on Sgt John Basilone, hero of Guadulcanal and Iwo Jima). Hugh Ambrose, Stephen Ambrose's son, wrote a tie-in book for the series that includes stories of other servicemen that did not make it into the series.

So, I would recommend it. I'm waiting to get enough funds together to buy the complete DVD set off of Amazon, so I can watch at my leisure. I have also got the "BoB" DVD set and enjoy the "extras" disc; and pull it out every so often to revisit it.

Cheers

Ian

Thanks guys! I'll record it and watch it when I get back.
I have 10 hours to look forward to

Ian : very interesting info; thanks!
The marathon ends with an hour long documentary with interviews with survivors from the original E-company (BoB). I look forward to that, too!

Cheers

Colin

Lol - been there, heard that! And that was the reason for me to get a second tv and player and set it up in our guest room.

I think you get the idea Colin, but just to add to it, it's easily as good as Band of Brothers, and excellently portrays the different War it was in the pacific.

5 * show

Cheers, Tim

Got the box set and just finished watching it. I enjoyed Band of Brothers more, but did really enjoy this. Definitely helps understand what it was like there. In many ways harder than it was in Europe. I can recommend watching it. Regards Andrew

There is a third series called 'masters of the air', on the USAAF, in the making. Can a fourth on the US navy be far behind?

Rgds, Thomas.

I hope so!!! BOB was excellent. The Pacific I found not quite as good but definitely worth seeing. The episode on Iwo seemed a bit off but all other episodes were great. Cheers Brian
