ASC Numbers
I've just acquired a rather nice WW1 period clasp knife with the soldiers number on the handle, '24817 ASC', however, when I checked the MiC index it shows two members of the ASC with this number, but different prefixes, is this usual?
The two candidates are: Eccles, Harry Army Service Corps T/24817 Driver Army Service Corps T/24817 Transport Corporal Bayley, T Harry L Army Service Corps Transport 427 Corporal 2nd Army Service Corps S4/24817 Serjeant Lee |

Hi Lee,
One is a "Transport"related number for (HT) Horse Transport units, the other is a "Supply" number obviously for Stores departments. Just read the bottom bit, S4 is related to Supply (S4 Labour) and were part of the New Armies, 1st, 2nd, 3rd & 4th Hope this is of help ken Last edited by Fatboy Ken; 07-05-13 at 11:18 AM. Thanks Ken, great info. Pity I can't tie it down to one man, still a good knife though.

Very nice knife - used to have one myself!
Can I suggest that it's more likely to be the Transport chap (picking stones out of horses hoofs), rather than the stores chap (stirring his tea). cheers, Andy C
