Default Need Help Regarding a QARANC Uniform

I am trying to help a friend with some details about a QARANC gray ward dress, but am not having much luck.

The main thing I am wanting to know is do only officers wear the solid red shoulder straps, or do all ranks wear them? The dress he has has these shoulder straps but not sure what rank would be appropriate to go with them?

Here is a picture of the type of dress I am referring to.

Michaels QA Ward Dress.jpg

Can anyone help please?

Thank you,

Terry

Terry,
Not sure whether this will answer your question, but from all the pictures I have seen of QARANS, only the Nursing Officers have shoulder boards.

The non-officer nurses have a QA embroidred breat badge on the ward dress.

So the picture you show appears to be that of an officer.

This link may help to show the differences between ward dresses.

Default QARANC

I believe that QARANC SRNs wear or wore the slip-on slides on ward dresses shown top left and top right in these pictures from my collection.
SRN Class 1 plain red and SRN Class 2 grey with red stripe.

Thanks Steven and Tim.

Tim, I believe the type of shoudlerstarps the dress has are like those in your pictures that have officer ranks, not slip-ons. If officers wear he all red ones like your officer ones, what would OR wear?

Terry,
Is this item the illustration you have used? Labels show NSNs so are from the 1960s + and not WW2

Thanks Tim,

Yes, that is it. I knew it was not WW2, but much more current. Although I can't date it. But am not able to date it. However since it is ot be used in a school presentation for he youngsters to dress up afterwards it is fine. Just wnat to try and get the correct badges and insignia on it. Have a breast patch for it, and several different stripes for OR and NCO, plus a beret with correct badge.

Just need to figure out the shoulder straps???

Terry, If you going to set it up as an OR (nurse), then there should be nothing on the shoulder straps.

And as a ward dress, she would wear a nurses white cap and not a beret.

See picture in link I originally sent or the following link:

Just need to figure out the shoulder straps???

On the shoulders of the dress there should be two loops of the same material as the dress, one near the shoulder the other near the collar. A plain gray (same material as the dress) double ended shoulder strap is folded over with the lower part slipped under the loops, the upper half is folded over the top and fastened to the lower half at the shoulder.

If I can find one I will post an image, basically it is one piece of cloth shaped as two shoulder straps.

Marc

This is an ATS version but you get the idea.

Thank you again gentlemen for the additional information.

Stephen, I know the beret was not worn with ward dress and need to see about finding a proper white cap. But, let me ask, is it possible that this is some kind of narracks dress? I am not aware of such, but want to be sure. My understanding is gray or white for ward dresses.

If we set it up as an OR dress, shoudl I also remove the gray loops that the red shoulder straps fit through?

Again everyone - Thank you!!!

Terry

This extract from JSP768 might be of interest:

Note the last line of text. See my earlier post number 3.

Terry,
As your friend already has a dress with red shoulder straps for a Nursing Officer, I would simply set up the uniform for an officer.

All you need then is a few rank pips (two or three per shoulder) and a nurse veil. If you search on the net you should be able to find a pattern for the veil and then get someone to make one up.

Then you dont need to figure out what shoulder straps you need and you dont need to attach the ward breast badge.

Refer to the links to pictures I sent or just search google for QARANC uniforms

Thanks Stephen,

Yes, that will be the easiest, and how we'll proceed. I had looked at all of the QA sites I know of but could not find anything finite as most showed nurses with tippets, and very few with he gray dress. Not a lot of text on the subject either.

Thanks again for the help.

Terry
