Unidentified badge
Hi all, Can anyone identify the badge below? I bought it a little while ago described as RAF personnel service afloat and assumed it was for RAF personnel who were posted aboard the RN carriers as part of the joint harrier force?
To date I have never seen it worn or listed in any official RAF badge list! Does anyone know if it is what it was described as? Regards Tony |

It's a sleeve badge worn by members of the RAF attached to the Fleet Air Arm.....although it looks to be post world war two as I would expect a wartime example to have a gold wreath, not silver.

Although the badge is as mentioned (RAF Officers attached to the Fleet Air Arm), it is I'm afraid, a repro. It was worn on the lower left sleeve, 1/2 an inch above the top rank stripe.
The badge should be a bit more oval and have a gold/gilt wreath. It was worn through the late 1920s and into the 1930s, but was abolished before the end of the decade. It appears (I think for the first time) in the 1929 Dress Regs, again in the same version reprinted in 1935, but not in the 1939 regs. |

Badge for comparison of a RN Officer attached to the RAF Fleet Air Arm. The badge measures 65mm wing tip to wing tip.
RAF Officer's attached to the RAF FAA would have worn just the centre device of silver wreath and anchor. This measures 22mm high x 18 wide. |

Thats a nice wing. When the FAA was first formed it comprised mostly RAF personnel. That wing, for an RN officer serving in the FAA was worn 1924 to 1938 when the wing gained a crown.

It does look similar but there should be no ring around the wreath. What size is this? The Original badge of this thread is about an inch high (I can get exact size from regs). This one looks more like a yacht club hat badge

For a number of years the RAF supplied aircrews to the Navy for their air arm.

Indeed, it was very much "their" arm.
