Default Reginald Dyer

The GOC Amritsar once again finds himself in the news today and will doubtless come under considerable examination in the Channel 4 documentary when screened tonight.

There's been a debate in the papers for the last few weeks.

There has certainly been a debate of one sort or another for the last hundred years!

Amritsar, in India, is the alledged scene of a massacre. GOC is the General Officer Commanding.

Alleged? Surely some mistake? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jallianwala_Bagh_massacre

Indeed, I do not understand why anyone would even consider using that word.

Apologies, it was late at night, I don't know too much about the incident. I was just trying to help Lancer17 to know what was being talked about.

I didnt know if it was maybe another Bloody Sunday type incident, where accounts may differ.

I'll shut up in future.

While doing some research online I found an edition of The Queens Regiment Magazine December 1968 , there was an article about 6th (CYCLISTS) BN.THE ROYAL SUSSEX REGT.ASSOCIATION that is interesting.

"In April ,1919, a detachment from the Bn. was present in Amritsar where Gen.Dyer felt compelled to open fire on the mob."

I wonder how future generations will look on our 'interpretations' of the military actions we were involved in ?

Interpretation will always be open to considerable debate.

It could have been a lot worse.

I believe that Dyer had a couple of armoured cars, with machine guns, with him. They could not get into the park, due to it's gateway being too narrow.

Sir Michael Francis O'Dwyer, GCIE KCSI was Lieutenant Governor of the Punjab in 1919, and had endorsed Reginald Dyers actions.

In March 1940 in London Udham Singh, a Sikh who had survived Amritsar, shot dead Micky O'Dwyer. He used a service revolver that he bought from a soldier in a pub.

After going on hunger strike Udham Singh was hanged. His body was returned to India in 1974:
