War Medal 1914-18 (6)7513 W-Man. Hari Singh, I.W.T.
Hello Gentlemen,
a german collector has a british War Medal 1914-18 with the engraving (6)7513 W-Man. Hari Singh, I.W.T. in his collection. The question is - the rank ( W-man) and the unit (I.W.T.) I have no idea, may be "Wireman" and "Indian Wireless Telegr...? Perhaps someone can help and solve this riddle, thanks in advance and kind regards Markus |

Markus,
IWT = Inland Water Transport of the Royal Engineers. W - Man will probably just be waterman regards

W-man on Indian medals is Weighman, not sure what the role was but the barges which were the responsibility of the IWT, were loaded by large cranes till around 1918 when they switched mostly to a roll-on-roll off service, so Weighman was likely to do with the loading

Thanks Gary,
just found with the help of Dr. Google the rank "sapper waterman" for lower ranks in the IWT, so the W-man should be waterman with the meaning of boatman. Thanks for your help, cheers Markus |
