Great item, great research - is it me, or could the initials in the label actually be JS - almost 'copperplate' style.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions but I’m pretty certain Saurin is not our man as this is a surname. Morgan Saurin was listed as Lt Col in 1891 with what I presume to be one of his sons as a Lt.
I owe a big thanks to my friend Dave Warren who alerted me to it in the first place.

Thanks to Terry (Home Guard) a plume has now been sourced. I have also identified the officer & I’ll post that info when I have a bit more time, together with some photos taken in better light.
