The 4th Battalion was nicknamed the "upside-down dinks." (or “arse up dinks”)

Yay! I knew that SOMEONE would know. I was also told that the Germans called them "the black-buttoned bastards".

The man I spoke to was the wonderfully engaging Lawrence ("Curly") BLYTH. Met him when he was 104 years old and he made it to 106.

He also told me the "monkey on the stick" title.

Iain, do you have any interesting pictures of 3rd and 4th Reinforcements?

3rd Reinforcements, William Eric Anderson, Service number 12/1542, C Company, Auckland Infantry Battalion, KIA 25th April 1915.

Thanks to Craig Hooper for providing a photo from his collection of the very rare New Zealand Maritime Department badge that is a close match to Stephen Keogh's badge.

The earliest non official badges to be worn by reinforcements was by members of the NZ Legion of Frontiersmen who went into camp with the 2nd Reinforcements.
The following picture is of is a member of the 6th Reinforcements taken in Wellington on the 22nd July 1915, he is wearing a Frontiersmen hat badge and Frontiersmen membership badge on the right-hand pocket flap of his uniform.
