Victorian Best Swordsman in Squadron?
My copy of The British Army. Its History, Customs, Traditions and Uniforms, by E.C. Talbot, lists the badge as: Best Swordsman in each Squadron. Can anyone please tell me if it was worn by both Cavalry and Yeomanry?

Hello,
Yes worn by Yeomanry but with silver bullion not gold. Your badge was also used a lot in the cavalry as a SSMIF & G (Squadron Sgt Major Instructor in Fencing & Gymnastics) If its ever for sale please send me a PM. regards

Many thanks. I actually think that it is silver bullion rather than gold. It came with half a pair of Sergeant's chevrons.

It certainly looks gold from the photos. The blades on regular and volunteer would always be silver.
the crown looks gold and the chevrons also look gold. regards

But the back of the badge, where the paper backing has come away, is a lot less tainted and looks to be silver.

Thats because, as I said, those are silver blades on the swords.
