Hello
My Great Grandfather served as SSM in the Yorkshire Dragoons, line Regiment 3DG.
I have photo of him wearing the black smaller version of the badge with his khaki service dress around 1910/14.
I have studied many photos of soldiers of the Yorkshire Dragoons. The black badges were I think for the khaki service dress, and brass for the blues walking out dress.
However, I've seen photos of them wearing both brass and black, large and small versions with khaki dress, also they've worn the QO white metal blues collar badge on the khaki cap, this is all around 1910/ 1919 period.
I think it was supply and demand what they wore.
I also have seen the bronze Officers Rose and crown badge in large and small.
Hope this helps.

Hiya,
The one you have shown is the larger one. Badge one on the ones I have shown is tbe smaller one, normally has a FN BHam on the slider.
The large and small are just different manufactures.
I believe the white metal/ chrome etc ones are 1950's.
Hope this helps

There are 4 different badges as mentioned before. There is also the officers bronze though of a different pattern though. Have a look at this album

In all the photos I've studied, I've never seen the Officeres wearing the bronze circle with South Africa scroll as a cap badge. It is in KK as being a cap badge. I've seen, including ones of my Great Grandfather when he was commissioned into the YD, all wearing the rose and crown version of the badge in bronze, I have two versions in my collection of this badge, just slightly different. The circle badge I've always seen as an OSD bronze COLLAR badge. The photos cover 1913 to 1920's, and I've seen quite a few.
It's always been a bit of a mystery that one.

Yes, I agree with 3DG.
KK got this wrong, the bronze scrolled badge is a collar not cap.
Cheers
Bill

I have seen a couple of examples on our favorite auction site, of the circle and scroll collar badge with prongs, like the officers bronze badges normally have, whether these are genuine items, or made up I don't know.
Either way I have never seen them being worn as a cap badge.

Its always been one of those badges with confussion about it. Definately made to be worn as collars but the question has always been were they worn as cap badges as well. Because its described in K&K as being worn as a cap people have taken this as being correct without question. I think Bill`s later image supports the view that it was likely only worn as a collar. There will always be the exception though!

regards, Dave
