British Indian Army?
Have had this very nicely made badge for quite awhile now and had thought it to possibly be the 17th Mussulman Rajput Infy., but is it?
Thanks, CB

I have seen a similar badge attributed to the 18th Infantry. Though it is a bit different.

Berkshire Yeomanry, possibly.
A pagri badge? |

First impression was Ottoman/Turkish.

I'm pretty sure its a pagri badge to the 18th Infantry circa WW1 - there are two illustrated in Ashok Nath's Sowars and Sepoys

Thanks so much all; it does indeed appear to be to the 18th. I have seen this described as Turkish, but the construction is clearly British and it did come with other Indian Army badges.

I have found 3 badges that are 'attributed' to the 18th. 1. From post #2 - Star sitting on cresent. 2. The one I linked to in post #7 - Pagri badge , round non voided. 3. Similar style to original badge but also star sitting on cresent. But I have also found numerous Turkish/Ottoman items where , as in the original post , the star is between the 'horns' of the cresent. 4. Turkish Officers belt buckle. 5. Uniforms showing a couple of badges. Quote:
Sorry for being a pain but one thing this forum has taught me is to look for 'proof' rather than just accept the most obvious answer.

Not being a pain at all. The joy of the internet is that everybody can chip in, from the true experts [not me!] to those who need help tying their shoes, though we have mercifully few of those on this forum. So, allow me to wax pedantic here. The crescent and star combination is an obvious one in Muslim symbology: see the flag of Pakistan. So, Indian Army [Muslim units], Ottoman Turk or non-military but Islamic group or person are all legitimate guesses. At least three other pre-47 IA units use the crescent moon in some form and who knows how many modern Pakistani organizations. What do we have? - Star and crescent which appear to be gilt, so, I'd say, 'Officer's something' or civilian jewellery. - pin back, so pagri badge or civilian jewellery [sweetheart brooch or maybe not] - no makers marks at all so...? - same outline - position of star vis-a-vis moon as the badge of the 18th which suggests but doesn't prove. - with other IA badges, which proves... not much I like an old Scottish legal verdict, where the choices were 'Not guilty', 'Guilty' and 'Not proven'. |
